Mental health and resilience is a great concern within the veterinary profession. Veterinarians have a need to nurture and care for others, but many vets do not properly care for themselves. This course presents current research and trends in the field of mental health and gives reasons why veterinarians struggle in this area. It describes factors that contribute to stress, burnout, and suicidality. This course will help you identify signs of stress and burnout, discover tools to nurture self-care, and recognize warning signs in yourself and your colleagues.

Objectives:
By the end of this course, learners will
Understand the complex nature of suicidality
Be aware of the factors that contribute to mental illness and high suicide rates among veterinarians
Be familiar with the statistics and trends of mental health illness among veterinarians
Understand the importance of resilience for mental health and wellbeing
Understand the external and internal factors that contribute to mental health or illness
Understand the difference between stress and burnout
Understand the difference between good stress and bad stress
Be aware of the vulnerabilities that contribute to burnout
Recognize signs of stress, burnout, and depression in yourself and others
Understand the importance of self-care and be able to develop a personalized self-care plan
